Intramural Fraternity Position
For my project, I made a new position in my fraternity called the Intramural Position. I also held the position for one semester. I have worked for the recreation team at SUU and I knew that there was some tension between the people who worked with intramurals and the fraternity. So, I made this position to help hold brothers in the fraternity more accountable and help them understand that intramurals is meant to be fun and to be a part of a team.
The position also helped with keeping everyone involved in intramurals, a lot of times brothers were getting left out and weren’t being invited to play. This position was made to help that and make sure everyone is invited. Overall, the position is just supposed to represent Sigma Chi during intramurals. It is supposed make sure that the fraternity is being represented in the best possible way. Intramurals is supposed to be such a fun activity and this position helps remind the fraternity that is just intramurals, and it is just a great way for people to compete.
I did this project because I love sports. I love being able to compete and play sports again, just like high school. My fraternity was having a hard time getting teams together and having good behavior. So, my inspiration was seeing two things that I was really involved with and I saw an issue and wanted to fix it. I love being a part of a team and competing, so I wanted to be able to do that with my fraternity.
I faced a lot of challenges in my time making this position. When I first approached my fraternity with the position, a lot of the brothers where turned off by the idea of having this position. A lot of people thought that it was a bad idea to combine the two organizations anymore. A lot of brothers wanted to make it so there was no team from the fraternity at all. I knew that it could be a good thing though, I knew this was a great way for brothers to bond. So, I had to do a lot of convincing and when I made the position there was a lot of talk but, I proved it was a good idea.
One of the other huge challenges I had was that a lot of brothers didn’t want to participate anymore, because of the problems we had in the past. It was hard to get a full team, I actually had to bring some people on the team that weren’t Sigma Chi’s. I made sure everyone on the team were friends and it ended up working out. We ended up winning the championship, so everyone on the team was happy.
My project benefited the fraternity overall and the recreation department that handles intramurals. I work with intramurals, so I know how big of an issue the fraternities behaviors were. When the behavior had started to change, I know how happy it made my boss, and it was just another thing he didn’t have to worry about. I thing it benefited my fraternity as well, now all brothers were getting a chance to play on the team. Also, the fraternity was benefiting from not behaving badly anymore, it was helping there reputation.
I saw a ton of benefits from this experience. I now know that if you see a problem, it is worth fixing. A lot of challenges will be thrown your way but you can handle them. I saw that there are so many different types of people, and all those people have different issues. It can be hard to please everyone, but I learned that it is best to try to please as many people as you can. That’s all you can do.
